I am a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Psychology at the University of Manchester and hold an Honorary appointment as a Clinical Psychologist at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. My professional experience is primarily in the field of adult mental health with a particular expertise in suicide prevention. My main research interests are in psychological models of suicidal thinking and behaviour with a view to developing effective preventive interventions. I am currently involved in the ongoing development and evaluation of a new Cognitive Behavioural Suicide Prevention therapy, which has already been trialled with people experiencing psychosis, high-risk prisoners, and within mental health in-patient services.
I contribute to the development and delivery of the teaching curriculum of the Clinical Psychology Doctorate (ClinPsyD) programme as well as supervise several ClinPsyD research projects. I play a full and active part in the organisation and delivery of the MSc Clinical & Health Psychology and the BSc Psychology programmes including teaching, supervision of students, marking and examining, teaching module/unit organiser, and academic advisor.
Alongside my teaching roles, I also have an extensive and sustained track record of supervising PhD and Professional Doctorate students, and I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
I am also the Director of the Suicide Risk and Safety Research Unit (SSRU), which is a collaboration between Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) and the University of Manchester. The SSRU aims to provide crucial evidence to support service and training improvements, and, ultimately, to contribute to a reduction in suicide and self-harm rates and to improve the safety of patients. I lead on the SSRU's scheme of work focussed upon the understanding and prevention of suicide.
