Overview

Hi, my name is Daniel Gasca García, and I currently working under supervision of Professor Simon Harper, Dr. Hood Thabit and Dr. Paul Nutter as PGR  on the project: Basal Tuner.

Basal Tuner aims to help people with Type 1 Diabetes stay in range. It takes monthly pump data to tune the basal rate month on month in the first instance, and then further to use the basal rate to ramp up and down when postprandial spikes are seen and  don't fall again and require correction, or in cases where boluses or corrections bring down blood glucose too much causing hypos. The idea is that the data downloaded would go into a system that would look at the month and then suggest configuration changes using either basal rate changes on an hourly basis, insulin sensitivity, or carb ratio, and based on the assertion that people follow routines which don't change much. The outcomes would serve as a starting point for discussions with the clinician and only the clinician would sanction the changes for the following month - it would not be about replacing the clinician or making any automated changes.

Formerly, I worked as Analytical Consultant for SAS Institute México  leading small teams in the design and development of end-to-end Analytical Solutions consisting of Data Integration, Analytical Modelling, Data Visualization and Deployment in production environments.

My main achievements were:

  • Successfully developed a recommender system on Club Premier (Aeroméxico's frequent flyer program) analysing 1,2 million users considering 7 key products to be offered to customers as a X-sell commercial strategy. The result was a database table containing a list of customers with at least 2 of their topmost recommended products to be offered. This result serves as input of CI360 (A SAS solution for management of Customer Intelligence) triggering a more user-specific relationship with the customers enhancing profits through leveraging the accuracy in recommendations.
  • Successfully developed an anomaly detection model on Tax Administration Service of the State of Guanajuato (abbreviated as SATEG in Spanish) analysing 3,8 million of taxpayers considering the perspective of 2 different departments. The result was an ABT scored with 3 different levels of risk and a series of variables used for further analysis in SAS Visual Investigator (A SAS solution used to detect and investigate fraud operations, Social Network Analysis, etc.) with the main target of increasing assertiveness in audits and taxes collected.
  • Successfully completed an analytical solution based on Social Network Analysis of the biggest Telco in Mexico “Telcel”  set of clients (33 million active users and 600,000,000 calls and SMS’s between them in a period of 3 months).The result was a user friendly operational dashboard with capabilities of analysing 4 million communities on average with the main objective of being used as a first stage for further development of Churn based models and  C-level reporting of the number of clients moving from competing companies.
  • Successfully developed an X-Sell model on “Banco Promerica de Guatemala” analysing 180,000 active credit card clients and 22 bank products. The result cut half of the calls needed to obtain 75% of the monthly target reported by the call centre. This project and the development of campaigns using a SAS multichannel specialised solution have changed the manner “Banco Promerica de Guatemala” captures new clients.
  • Successfully co-developed and deployed an analytical based solution used to collect taxes from importers mistakenly requesting tariff preference based on NAFTA. The result was a dashboard used to investigate possible fraud operations. This improved the performance of the Central Administration in Audit of Foreign Trade Operations accomplishing a target of 20 million USD in a period of 3 years.
  • Analysis of importing and exporting trade operations in Mexico with the main objective of generating a key report to the Secretary of Finance and Public Credit. The importance of this analysis relied on the new US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) that was being renegotiated in 2017 and all the secretaries of state needed a position on the possible exit of the United States from the trade agreement.
  • Successful development of a dashboard used to analyse trade operations of Mexican exporters and importers used to report to higher level administrators in the government hierarchy. Since there were no machine learning algorithms involved, the main achievement was the effective use of storytelling considering the big number of trade operations of a country with a balance of trade peaking 780 billion USD (considering importing and exporting operations) in 2017.
