Daniel Ka Chun So is a Reader in the School of Electrical & Electronics Engineering at the University of Manchester, where he joined in 2003 as a lecturer. He received the PhD degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong in 2003. He obtained the BEng degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering (First Class Honor) from the University of Auckland, New Zealand in 1996. From 1997 to 1998, he joined the Orion Systems International Limited as software engineer, and was later promoted to senior software engineer.

His research interests includes green communications, 5G networks, heterogeneous networks, content-centric network, cognitive radio, non-orthogonal multiple access, massive MIMO, D2D communications, cooperative MIMO schemes, multihop communication, channel equalization and estimation techniques.  

Dr So is the lead for the University in the GreenTouch consortium, which is a major international effort aiming to reduce energy consumption of communication networks by 1000 times. He is an Editor of IEEE Wireless Communications Letters, and a track co-chair of IEEE VTC Spring 2016IEEE VTC Spring 2017, and the upcoming IEEE VTC Spring 2018. He also served regularly on the Technical Programme Committee of various prestigious international conferences, including ICC, Globecom, VTC, & WCNC. He is a college member of EPSRC. He was also a research proposal reviewer for EPSRC,German Research Foundation, and Israel Science Foundation. He is a frequent reviewer for various internatonal journals and conferences. Dr So served as a PhD external examiner for a number of UK (incl. Imperial, UCL, Kings, Newcastle, Leeds, Warwick) and overseas universities (incl. Melbourne, Helsinki, IIS). He is currently a programme external examiner for Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, and served as external course advisor for UC Lancashire. 

Dr So is the Director of Postgraduate Taught for the School since 2009 (except 2013). He was also the Course Director for MSc in Communication Engineering from 2009-2014.  He is a Chartered Engineer and a member of IET, a Senior Member of IEEE, and a Fellow of Higher Education Academy.
