Overview

My current research is modelling risk factors for schwannomas, a type of tumour that affects the central nervous system. I'm especially interested in developing the simplest possible mathematical models that connect molecular and genomic data to population risk and incidence. My goal is to improve our understanding of how radiation and genetic predispositions contribute to tumour risk, as well as helping to discover new genes and risk factors.

Biography

I completed my Master's in Physics at the University of Exeter in 2013, and went on to write a PhD on Biological Physics at the University of Edinburgh, studying under Bartek Waclaw. I passed my viva voce in 2017.

I then moved to Seattle to conduct post-doctoral research at the University of Washington with Ivana Bozic, working on cancer evolution and models of colorectal cancer incidence. In particular, how to incorporate specific genetic mutations and molecular subtypes into models of incidence and risk, and the detectability of these mutations.

I moved back to the UK in spring 2020 to join a computer vision start-up called InSync Technology as a software engineer. I enjoy keeping on top of the latest developments in the industry, and run a regular journal club on applications of neural networks and new imaging techniques.

I continued to study cancer risk in tandem. In 2020, I started analysing data from Gareth Evans' group using a new mathematical model. I joined the group officially as an honorary member in September 2021.
