I graduated from the University of Manchester in 1993 with a First Class degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, followed by an MSc in Instrument Design and Application (Electrical Engineering) and a PhD in "Image formation in the scanning optical microscope" in 1994 and 1997 respectively, both from the University of Manchester. I am a Member of the IEEE.
After my postgraduate studies I worked for GEC Plessey Semiconductors as a Design Engineer working on read channel designs for DVD systems, before returning to The University of Manchester as a Research Associate in 1998. I worked briefly as a Research Fellow at the University of Exeter before I returned to Manchester in 2000 as a Lecturer in the School of Computer Science. I was appointed to my current post of Senior Lecturer in 2007.
